The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Carole Elliott at 5:24 p.m.
MINUTES: Motion: To approve the minutes of March 9th. Motion by Don, 2nd by Brenda. Approved.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
FINANCIALS: We went over the AKCA checking account’s Profit & Loss statement for March: We had a net loss of $-3,683.39 however, $2,000 of that was due to purchasing to replenish the bookstore with t-shirts, books, etc. For the Accounts Summary report (AKCA, PayPal and KHV combined), we had a net loss of $1,342.16 for the month of March.
WEBSITE: Everything is going well.
KHA: We have a new applicant: Nova Reaves from Utah. She started the program last month. We are still trying to find a replacement for Julie Miller, who has served in her position for almost 3 years and is ready to ‘retire.’
PROJECT KHV: We paid the recent invoice from OSU of $1,110 on the grant to OSU. So far, we’ve paid $19,300 out of the $30,000 grant. Washington Koi & Water Garden Society has decided to donate all proceeds from their raffles in March and May to AKCA for KHV research. They will also ask for donations in their newsletter. Their PNKCA reps will propose that all proceeds from the super raffle at the PNKCA convention this year go to support AKCA’s fund for KHV research. Many thanks and we wish all club were so supportive!

Clubs or individuals who send in money towards the KHV Project, don’t forget: You will be listed in KOI USA magazine under the ranking (amount you have sent) for money received and donations are tax deductible.
PUBLICATION: We did not get the savings we expected from cutting back on the number of issues printed; we will address this with the printing company’s new owners. If we can’t reach a mutual agreement, we will start looking at other printing companies. Thanks to Terry Maxfield, we have a new KOI USA Article Index that includes updates from 2012 to 2017. This is the first time our index has been revised since Doug Dahl retired. We only had 2 outstanding invoices from advertisers this past issue.
MEMBERSHIP: The annual dues are coming in from clubs. Dues must be paid before July 1st or clubs will be dropped from the AKCA and then a $50 reinstatement fee will be required to come back.
JUDGING: No report.
RISK MANAGEMENT: We have 30 clubs enrolled (6 enrolled in the last month). Deep South mailed a check that we have yet to receive. 3 other clubs are also interested in enrolling.
BOOKSTORE: We had $1,349.92 in bookstore sales last month. $750.60 was from the Koi Club of San Diego Koi Show (along with 5 KOI USA subscriptions). In April Ron went up to the NorCal Show and sold $882.80 in merchandise (and 4 KOI USA subscriptions).
MEMBERSHIP QUESTIONS: None.
SEMINAR REPORTS:
2017 Seminar: The form for registration is on the website and in KOI USA magazine. Everything is coming along. We’re hoping for a good turnout since we haven’t met on the East Coast in over 10 years. So far reservations are slow so get yours in ASAP.
2018 Seminar: Will be held in San Diego. Nothing to report yet.

OLD BUSINESS:
- Claudia Nice proposed a joint venture to publish a book on her artwork of koi. Blue Z is checking into the cost for 22-24 pages. So far, based on quotes received, to break even we would have to sell it at $16. We hope to find a better deal!
- We mailed out the Koi of the Year trophies to Dennis Tran, Bill Tullis, Rick & Pam Jokerst, and Brendan Moody at a cost of $47. Congratulations to the winners!
- We received an email from Ted Baughman who requested any of our past AKCA chairs come to their PNKCA convention as a rep for AKCA. We thank Ted for their kind offer and have spread the word.

Written report submitted by Carole Elliott: So Cal Koi Club held their March meeting at McFadden Intermediate School where the club built a 2,500 gallon koi pond in 1996. It was good seeing Joan & Bob Finnegan able to finally attend one of our meetings after health problems. The club decided to hold meetings every other month, starting in August. Debby Young, of Southern Arizona KA, said they voted to hold their meetings every other month during the year. The club position of president has yet to be filled. There will be no meeting in April. The club has sent in its AKCA dues and voted. Jan Jordan, of Mid-Columbia K&PC, said they will be having their first meeting of the year, April 23rd, at 2 p.m. at a pond host they have never been to: Andrea Mackey. This will be their spring wake up meeting as they’ve had a late spring. Time to count the interested members and see what activities they have energy to do. She’s hoping that it being a new place folks will show up to see and pay their dues for the year. Mary Ann Penix, of Piedmont K&WGS, said Jeff Reiter was their guest speaker at their April meeting. He discussed some fish diseases and treatment. They met at the home of their president, Myles Weiner. They also had a plant swap. There were lotus, water lilies, umbrella palm and lizard tail to choose from. They had a wonderful covered dish dinner and great weather for their meeting. They are planning a pond tour for June. Norm Call, of Oregon K&WGS, said they will be participating in the Master Gardeners plant sale on May 6th. They will also have a Koi Expo on June 10th with a koi auction and sale. Chris Wilkolaski, of Niagara Frontier K&PC, said that in April, they will be holding their elections. They are also going to be hosting a competition with frog houses that Mastersons Garden Center donated to the club. They are to decorate them and bring pictures back for a little creative fun. They will be going out and setting up the County Fair pond that they have taken care of for years. Final touches are going on for the koi show scheduled for Father’s Day weekend this June. They are all waiting for the weather to break so they can open up their ponds. Mel Barutha, of South Carolina K&WGS, said their club presented a slide show Koi & Water Gardening to a second garden club in the Greenville area at the end of March. This should help them with getting people interested in attending their Pond Tour in June. They have 12 ponds on tour for the one day tour of June 10th. Their April meeting was just completed on April 15th. The presentation to the club members was about raising shrimp for human consumption in a large indoor facility in the Greenville area by the name of Urban Seas Aquaculture. The owner provided slides and answered many questions. They were all eager to find out when the shrimp will be available. The owner’s target is for many of the awesome restaurants in the downtown Greenville area first before opening and/or contracting with one of the local fresh fish markets. It was much different than many of their past presentations but was well received. Now the challenge is for the 12 pond owners to prep for the June pond tour. They will be posting all the info on their website. Ralph Smith, of Southwest K&PA, said their first pond-side meeting of 2017 was held at the home of Don & Nell Harrawood. They thanked then and their guest speaker, Danny Arellano, from Paloma Lofts entitled “The Fancy Pigeon Hobby.” Their next meeting will be hosted by Dr Carol Miller, with a representative from Feathered Farm Rescue as their guest speaker. They also welcome their new member, Charles Dodson. Written report submitted by Don Chandler: Rosimeri Tran, of Central California Koi Society, reports the April 11th general meeting was held at the home of Tom & Elaine Callahan. We started the meeting off with a koi judging exercise with 4 Gin Rin Showa’s that Rosimeri and Seng recently purchased at Champion Koi. Members were to put these koi in order of best Gin Rin and then best skin quality. Later once the answers were revealed, Seng went into a more in depth discussion as to why these were better choices. Rosimeri discussed the upcoming April 22nd Barstow Koi field trip as well as the May 20th joint meeting with Bakersfield Koi Club. Seng discussed interest in the upcoming CCKS member grow out contest and had a few members sign up. There was a round table discussion on why and how to quarantine new fish, as well as which food to be feeding the koi during the spring time. Mac McClain, from Inland Koi Society, reports our monthly meeting was held at the beautiful home of Rob and Renee Johnson. The Johnson’s have a 17,000 gallon pond with one of the largest cascading waterfalls I have ever seen. Renee designed the pond, and Rob, who is a general contractor, built the pond himself, with the help of a consultant he hired. The huge array of koi is beautiful, and they have a lot of water to swim in. Rob gave a talk on the building of the pond and all the problems he had during the construction process. Due to not having a guest speaker, Rob told of his current pond problems, and asked our membership to give him advice on how to correct them. There were probably times that Rob wished he had not agreed to go alone with the process, in that some of our members were very candid in their suggestions. Rob took everything in good spirit, as it was meant to be, and overall was very receptive to the advice he received. Nick Milfeld talked about the IKS Koi auction and used equipment sale coming up on Saturday, June 3, 2017. The co-chairs are Nick Milfield and Larry Leverett, if anyone has any questions. As usual, the meeting was graciously officiated by Vice President Rob Fales. The always great raffle was conducted by Rob, Deanna, and Eric Fales. AKCA Rep. Mac McClain read off the latest AKCA minutes, and took questions. The April meeting will be hosted by Phil and Rachel Hunter on April 23. Scotty Yee, of Koi Club of San Diego, reports the Apr 9th meeting will be at the Japanese Friendship Garden, Balboa Park. The speaker will be Sara Shah on the History of the Japanese Friendship Garden. Set up at 11 a.m.; lunch at 12 noon; and meeting starts at 12:30. Pot Luck. Eve Bretzke, of Santa Clara Valley K&WGC, reports we had our regular meeting March 21st; our president Maus Stearns lead the very well attended meeting that featured Mel Bretzke of Advanced Landscape Systems and Vice President of our club. He spoke on pond construction concepts, design and building along with a Q&A session on all things related to pond building and maintenance. We will be having a booth at the Annual Cupertino Cherry Blossom Festival April 29 -30, 2017 and are working on other club events for 2017 including our annual pond tour to be held July 15, 2017. The club is assisting with the AKCA KHV Fundraising Drive. We encourage our membership to support this initiative by the AKCA. Our April meeting is scheduled to highlight Lisa Harvey of Tokaido Gallery to speak on “Japanese Antiques and Culture”. April is also the kick off month for the club’s annual Koi of the Year and our Koi Person of the Year nominations. Check out their website at http://www.sckoi.com. Judy Nicholson, of Santa Clarita Koi & WG Club, reports the March 26, 2017 meeting was held at the home of a member who maintains a large koi pond in the Santa Clarita Valley area that was threatened by the recent Sand Fire. He discussed the measures necessary to remove the large amount of ash that covered the exterior of his residence. The club’s calendar is full and includes a field trip in September. Various koi-related sites are being considered including arboretums and garden sites. The club president and a founding member of this club announced his retirement from the Club following many years of service as an officer. The vice president has assumed the role of acting president. Members were advised that discount cards are available for club members at a local nursery. The next meeting will be April 23, 2017. They will be sorely missed and hopefully will be able to regroup. Joann Socash, of Texas Koi & Fancy Goldfish Society, reports in May they will be holding their Spring Koi Sale at Water Garden Gems in Marion, TX featuring koi from Andy Moo and longfins from Van Shulz of Tank Hollow. Check out their website at http://texaskoi.org. Dick Hadley, of Upper Midwest Koi Club, reports in May they will be holding an auction for members with koi to move on to new homes. Helena Hileman, of Washington Koi & WGS, reports that to celebrate the change of season, we are rescheduling our April Membership Meeting from April 19 to Sunday, April 30. We are going on a tour of the Seattle Japanese Garden on Sunday, April 30 instead. Doesn’t this sound like fun? The Seattle Japanese Garden is part of the Washington Park Arboretum and is co-managed by Seattle Parks and Recreation and the Arboretum Foundation. It was the first major public Japanese style garden built on the West Coast after World War II. The 3.5 acre formal garden was designed and constructed under the supervision of world-renowned Japanese garden designer Juki Iida in 1960.Check their website at http://washingtonkoi.org. Don Chamberlain, of ZNA NorCal, reports the club held their 10th Annual Koi Show April 1 & 2. This year it was billed as a National Show as exhibitors and visitors from many states attended the show this year. With great weather and great koi, it was an extremely enjoyable event. Several vendors came from far away to participate and meet new customers in California. A large crowd of visitors created a very vibrant scene Saturday and Sunday. Written report submitted by Brenda Chandler: Jerry Kyle, of Camellia Koi Club, reports the club has invited their neighbor, San Francisco Bay Area Koi Club, to join them at this April’s meeting at President Sam’s home to see his rebuilt pond and hear guest speaker, Iva Gaglione, from Star Milling (Ultra Balance) speak on feeding koi. As we are experiencing spring weather changes, the timing is perfect for all of us to be reminded of the pitfalls of not understanding all the potential challenges of feed-or-not-to-feed and what-or-how-much-to-feed. Iva and Star Milling have supported many AKCA clubs going back in time when CKC and SFBAKC co-hosted a West Coast AKCA Seminar. With more knowledge from more advanced research, Iva will teach us what is better than some of the things we did in the old days. We learn and we change and our babies do better. To further add to the enjoyment, the Club Koi Person of the Year will be chosen and presented with the CKC Perpetual Trophy which is passed from winner to new winner each year.
